Radio Communication with First Responders Pending at Lenape Tech

Two-way radio communication at a local technical school would greatly improve school security, according to one local official.

Lenape Technical School Special Programs Coordinator Carla Thimons further explained the need for such during discussion on the Manor Township school’s $18,000 Pennsylvania Department of Education Safe School Initiative Competitive Targeted Grant award.

“These will truly help us feel better about safety overall, because communication is key,” Thimons said.

She said several programs at the technical school provide a unique challenge where areas of the building would not be able to listen to announcements over the public address system, and the radios would provide necessary internal communication with teachers and staff.

Thimons said the grant funds were accepted by the Joint Operating Committee last month, and funding received, but the radios have not been purchased yet. She explained officials want to coordinate efforts with the Armstrong County Department of Public Safety to ensure that communication will be loud-and-clear.

“We want to determine the best purchase,” Thimons said. “We have an idea in mind what we want, but we want to coordinate with (the Department of Public Safety.)”

Radios are to be expected to be carried in the school hallways by officials by the start of the 2014-15 school year.

Thimons, who has been Special Programs Coordinator for 10 years and was previously the technical school’s principal, coordinates special education, grant writing and safety procedures at the school.

Besides the two-way radios, Thimons said school officials are planning to hold school wide drills, including a mass-evacuation drill.

Joint Operating Committee members also unanimously approved the hire of Night Watchman Samantha Walker, retroactive to March 7.

Principal Karen Brock last month said the school used to have night watchmen, but another one needed to be hired to replace that individual.

Armstrong School District also received Safe School Initiative Competitive Targeted Grant funding in the amount of $25,000, and put the money toward the purchase of new and updated security cameras “as another layer of security throughout the district,” according to School Superintendent Stan Chapp in March.
Director of Technology and Information Services Anthony Grenda said about 16 surveillance cameras will be added to the interior and exterior of Elderton and Shannock Valley Elementary Schools. He hopes those cameras are installed by the end of the current school year. Several have already been installed, he said earlier this week.
Apollo-Ridge and Leechburg Area School Districts also received $25,000 in grant funds.
Earlier this year, Armstrong also received $40,000 in the state’s Safe Schools Grant Program for utilization of a school police officer. Those officers have also been already utilized throughout the district.
The Lenape Tech Joint Operating Committee meets again Thursday evening, beginning with a 6:30PM public budget session at the school.

How Far Do Two Way Radios Work

The range of a two way radio or walkie-talkie actually depends on a multitude of factors. These prohibitive issues can be things like the radio’s transmit power, the quality of the in-built antenna and even the amount of potential obstacles to block signal.

As we will discuss further in this article different types of radios work better in certain environments. UHF (Ultra-High Frequency is any radio frequency range between 300 MHz and 3GHz) radios, tend to work better in urban or indoor environments than their VHF (Very High Frequency is any radio frequency range between 30 MHz and 300MHz) counterparts. Using the right kind of radio in the right kind of situation can be a major factor in your radio’s performance.

A good general guide is to expect a business walkie talkie working in simplex operation to talk about 1-2 KM (1-1.5 Miles) of coverage.  We do have a number of customers that do experience further distances, but I think it’s important to give the standard distance rather that the optimal distance.  This would be for business grade 4 watt UHF radios or 5 watt VHF radio frequencies.

 

As the statement above says, there are radios that boast a higher operating distance (apparently even some that claim an optimal distance of 30 miles!). Frankly, this is unlikely to actually be the case. Whilst it is theoretically possible for a two-way radio signal to reach that far, the sheer amount of obstacles, signal interferences and technical gremlins hampering your progress, render attempts at such a feat of signal strength to be fools errands. 

If you are desperately in need of a radio that works longer distances, you can purchase a repeater, which is a powerful extra radio that boosts your signal over much longer distances. They work by communicating on one frequency and transmitting on a second. The Radio is then programmed to transmit on the first frequency and receive on the second, with the repeater powered by 240v and commonly attached to an antenna the range is doubled and sometimes quadrupled. However, these can be very expensive and also require a license in most countries

Another option would be to rent airtime from your local radio dealer. For a small monthly charge, you should be able to boost your signal coverage exponentially. It won’t be as powerful as a repeater, but it should be enough to cover most of your needs. Once again, for a more specific estimate, you would need to contact a local dealer.

Unfortunately, two-way radio systems are affected by a great many variables. A system that might work brilliantly in one location may be a shambles in another. Picking the right radio for the right working environment is a choice that simply cannot be rushed. Ultimately, the choice has to be an informed one. 

How To Use Two Way Radios

One of the biggest selling points for two-way radios is their simplicity. Radios are extremely easy both to initially set up and to use.

The average two-way comes equipped with a PTT (or Push To Talk) button. This button is held down when you want to speak into the device and released when you wish to hear the reply. It is important to say “over” after you have finished talking, this way the person receiving your message knows that you have finished speaking and aren’t simply distracted or taking a breath. If you both try to talk at the same time, neither signal will come through.

How Two Way Radio WorksMost two way radios will operate at a decent distance, but as we discussed earlier this month, there are many variables that can affect a radio signal. Obstacles, be they man-made or naturally occurring, can seriously affect signal quality and transmission efficiency. The manufacturer’s promises about maintaining perfect signal over long distances (they all do it) almost always refer to optimum conditions with no interference (and must therefore be taken with a pinch of salt!).

Before you do anything practical, read the instructions carefully and familiarize yourself with the radio’s various functions and capabilities. Learn how to send an emergency signal and how to set your device to different channels. Despite being relatively simple gadgets (as well as blessedly easy to operate), many modern radios now come with a plethora of extra features (such as a digital screen, or a text messaging option) and it is wise to make sure you know what these features are and how to use them.

When carrying your walkie-talkie, you must always remember to keep it securely fastened to your body at all times when the device is not in use. Most radios come equipped with some sort of method to attach them to clothing (like a belt or a safety jacket), but if yours did not, then you’ll definitely want to buy one.

Once you are a licensed radio user, the first thing you’ll need to do is go for a test run. Give a friend or colleague one walkie talkie, keep another for yourself and then travel over progressively longer distances, contacting each other regularly, until the signal becomes unrecognizable. This test should ideally be performed in an area similar to the one you are going to be using the radio in, for obvious reasons.

As a side note, it is also advisable to make sure that your friend/colleague has your mobile phone number and that you have theirs, that way you can keep in touch with one another should any unforeseen technical problems arise.

Difference Between a Walkie Talkie and a Two Way Radio

Although the terms ‘walkie-talkie’ and ‘two-way radio’ can be used interchangeably, some minor differences between the two technologies do actually exist. In a professional context, it is best to know which device you are referring to before you refer to it (but this is substantially less important on a day-to-day level).

Essentially, a walkie-talkie is the same as a two-way radio; there is no overt difference between the two. However, because there are so many different radios on the market, a distinction has arisen. The term ‘walkie-talkie’ tends to imply a ‘hobby’ model, or an otherwise cheap radio. Conversely, the term ‘two-way radio’ tends to be more readily accepted in a business, as well as any equipment specific, context. 

Walkie-talkies were invented around the time of the Second World War and were principally used by the military. Although they came in different forms, the most common version featured a large handset, which had a long antenna protruding from it. Modern walkie-talkies, on the other hand, feature a smaller design, typically with a rugged outer casing and a short aerial. They usually operate via a PTT (Push To Talk) button and available models vary in range from cheap children’s toys to professional, military grade equipment.

Generally, walkie-talkies are limited to only a few watts of power and a relatively short signal range. To this end, radio services often use a repeater (a device that increases range and boosts signal by squashing unused frequencies) in order to improve the walkie-talkie’s operation.

For their part, two-way radios, although they are also portable hand-held transceivers (a device that can both TRANSmit and reCEIVE messages) and they also use the PTT system, are slightly different.

A two-way radio is likely to have a stronger range and a harder outer casing. This is because the term ‘two-way radio’ denotes a better class of product (usually). 

Some two-way radios are also capable of sending and receiving messages at the same time; this is called ‘full duplex’. An example would be a mobile phone, which employs two different radio frequencies at the same time. However, although a mobile phone is technically a two-way radio, the device is very different from what we understand as either a walkie-talkie or a two-way.

The most important distinction is that ‘two-way radio’ almost always refers to professional, licensed equipment, whereas ‘walkie-talkie’ more often describes unlicensed, consumer-grade radios.

How does two way radio work

A walkie-talkie or 2 way radio is a battery-powered transceiver (meaning that it can both transmit and receive radio signals). Walkie-talkies receive radio waves via an antenna and can also broadcast return signals (on the same frequency) via the same device.

A walkie-talkie essentially converts incoming signal into sound and outgoing sound into signal.

The antenna on a walkie-talkie is home to various groups of electrons. These electrons respond to specific, pre-set channels (different groups respond to different channels). When the walkie-talkie antenna intercepts radio waves, the electrons translate those radio waves into electrical impulses, which then pass through the device and into a small processor, housed within the walkie-talkie itself.

How do Walkie Talkies work

The processor, in turn, converts the impulses into a signal, which is then played back by the speakers.  This is not at all unlike the process of hearing as undertaken by the Human ear. The speakers vibrate to the same pattern as they did when the sender of the signal spoke into their own device, replicating exactly what was broadcast from their end.

For an outgoing signal, the vibrations that make up a Human voice rattle a small membrane inside the microphone. The walkie-talkie’s processor then converts those vibrations into an electrical impulse. The impulse is pushed outwards, towards the antenna, where it is transmitted over the desired audio channel. From there, the process takes place in the opposite order. It is, however, the same process every time.

Interestingly, mobile phone technology is basically the same as walkie-talkie/two-way radio technology. The major difference, however, is that whereas walkie-talkies are only have a half duplex channel (meaning that only one signal can be sent or received at any given time), mobile phones are full duplex, meaning that two signals can be sent and received simultaneously.

Another major difference is that mobiles rely on nearby cellular towers in order to get a signal, whereas walkie-talkies utilise a point-to-point system, communicating between individual handsets and also devices called ‘repeaters’, which boost overall signal strength by blocking out specific channels.

Of course, because there is only one channel featured on a walkie-talkie, only one person can speak at any given time, whereas mobile phones can broadcast conversations that are identical to those between two face-to-face people.

The success of walkie-talkies likely lies with their innate simplicity. The process by which a transceiver works is as clear and uncluttered a process as one could wish for.

Now, to answer your question, two-way radios use a range of what are called ‘frequency bands’ – these are areas of the electromagnetic spectrum (a fancy name for the total range of electromagnetic radiation) that are used for audio communication.

Most radios will operate on either VHF (Very High Frequency – any frequency range between 30MHz and 300MHz) or UHF (Ultra High Frequency – any radio frequency range between 300MHz and 3GHz) modes, but the two types of radio are incompatible with each other, so a careful choice is required on the part of the user.

Generally speaking, UHF radios are better suited to urban or indoor environments, whilst VHF has a slight advantage if you’re using your radio outside. For more on the VHF vs. UHF debate, check out Wendy from Stoke-On-Trent’s question, posted in December.

Anyway, the lowest frequency is the VHF Lowband frequency (25Mhz – 50MHz), whilst the VHF Highband frequency is anything between 126MHz – 174MHz. The general UHF Band is anything between 403MHz and 512MHz.

Of course, the right frequency for you depends greatly on your needs. Is your radio system used professionally or as a hobby? Is security an issue or not really? That sort of thing.

Remember also that it is illegal to use certain frequencies, as they are used by the Emergency Services. Two-way radio use is actually quite tightly monitored/restricted, largely for public safety purposes.

According to a Motorola online course “Because frequency spectrum is an infinite resource, and the number of users in many areas is high, many radio channels are becoming crowded. Channel loading is a term used to describe the number of users assigned to the same frequency. Channel loading is so heavy in some areas that additional users are no longer allowed on particular channels, or frequencies. The use of channels is authorized and licensed by government agencies in most countries”.

The course goes on to say that,

“In all cases, a license to operate radio equipment is required and must be applied for with the appropriate governing body. The license is granted to operate on a particular frequency, or set of frequencies, with specific eligibility rules that must be met”.

I recently started watching NASCAR and I was wondering how the drivers communicate with the pit crew?

Y’know, I visited your fine city of Dublin many years ago and had a wonderful time. It is a truly magical place.

Anyway, on to your question….

NASCAR drivers use a unique radio system that is built in to their crash helmets. These are occasionally customized to suit the individual wearer. In addition to this, there is a push-to-talk button (exactly like the one found on a walkie-talkie), which is situated in the steering wheel. A wiring harness connects the various components together and a separate battery operates the whole thing. The signal is broadcast via a whip antenna that is attached to the roof of the car.
